Moving from the US to Portugal, in short
Americans move to Portugal on the D7 (passive income from €920 a month in 2026), the D8 (remote work from €3,680 a month) or the D2 (entrepreneurs), applying through the Portuguese consular network in the US. With Relocate360 you sign a US-law agreement with a US company, pay by domestic ACH and meet us by secure video or in person in your state, while our Porto team handles NIF, banking, housing, AIMA and settling in.

What Americans Should Know Before Moving
The Portuguese rules are the same for every nationality. These are the US-specific pieces we plan around with you.
| Visa routes | D7 passive income · D8 remote work · D2 entrepreneur |
|---|---|
| Where to apply | The Portuguese consular post covering your state, generally through VFS Global visa centers |
| Background check | FBI Identity History Summary, apostilled by the US Department of State |
| Minimum income (2026) | D7: €920 a month (+50% spouse, +30% per child) · D8: €3,680 a month |
| US taxes | US citizens keep filing US federal returns and report foreign accounts where required (FBAR, FATCA) |
| Tax treaty | The US–Portugal income tax treaty helps prevent double taxation |
| Social Security | Payable to US citizens living in Portugal; the US–Portugal totalization agreement has been in effect since 1989 |
| Health coverage | Medicare generally does not cover care abroad, so private insurance is needed for the visa and first months |
| Permanent residency and citizenship | Permanent residency after 5 years; citizenship after 10 years for US nationals (2026 law) |

Book Your Free BriefingIs Relocate360 an American company?
Yes. Relocate360 LLC is a registered US limited liability company (Wyoming) with an office in Philadelphia. Your service agreement is governed by US law and you can pay by domestic ACH, while our operations team in Porto delivers the move on the ground.
Can I meet the Relocate360 team in person in the US?
Initial strategy is handled through secure virtual briefings that fit your schedule and time zone. Our founder keeps a regular presence in the US and can meet you in person in your state. Once we are engaged as your service provider, we travel between Portugal and the US whenever meeting face to face helps build trust and plan your relocation.
Where do Americans apply for a Portugal residency visa?
Through the Portuguese consular post that covers the state you live in. In the US, applications are generally lodged at VFS Global visa centers on behalf of the responsible consulate. We confirm the right office, book the appointment and prepare your file with you.
Do I still file US taxes after moving to Portugal?
Yes. US citizens file US federal tax returns wherever they live, and foreign bank accounts may need to be reported (FBAR and FATCA). The US–Portugal income tax treaty helps prevent the same income being taxed twice. We coordinate the Portuguese side with your US tax preparer. See our 2026 guide to US and Portuguese taxes.
Can I receive Social Security while living in Portugal?
Yes. Social Security benefits can be paid to US citizens living in Portugal, typically by direct deposit. The US–Portugal totalization agreement, in effect since 1989, also coordinates social security coverage for people who have worked in both countries.
Does Medicare cover me in Portugal?
Generally no. Medicare does not cover routine care outside the United States, so you will need private health insurance for your visa application and your first period in Portugal. Once resident, you can register with Portugal’s public health service (SNS), and many expats keep private cover as well.
How long does a move from the US to Portugal take?
Most D7 and D8 moves take roughly 4 to 9 months from document preparation to residence card. The FBI background check and its apostille, consulate appointment availability and AIMA scheduling in Portugal are the main variables.
